A design faithful to the Jesuit lifestyle.
This new residential center for Jesuits serving Gonzaga University and Gonzaga Preparatory School is sited in a highly visible location on campus to make the building and its main chapel easily accessible, approachable and identifiable.
Housing 22 dwelling units, the facility has three stories and a basement. Each 540-square-foot unit features a living-sleeping-study area, bathroom, walk-in closet and private balcony.
Common spaces and amenities include a living room with a gas fireplace and balconies, lounge, TV room with theater-quality seating, dining room with adjacent full commercial kitchen, conference room that also serves as flex space for overflow dining, exercise room with a terrace, resident chapel, offices, various-size conference rooms, and an enclosed landscaped courtyard with a water feature.
Purposeful material choices reinforce the Jesuit order’s commitment to sustainable living and stewardship of the creation. Careful consideration was given to the use of long-lasting, low-maintenance materials such as masonry, stone, wood and fiber-cement panels. Wood is visible in all common areas, providing a warm residential aesthetic. All common spaces and private dwelling units have large expanses of glazing to maximize the amount of natural light entering the building, which was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.
Bernardo|Wills Architects also supplied interior design services for this project, which the firm designed in association with BAR Architects.
